The social lens of a functionalist visualizes the world by seeing all parts of society put together to form a larger picture. They see that these parts, both the good and the bad parts, all work together to create stability within the society. The functionalist perspective on this issue of child abuse can be broken up into two sections: the perspective of business and the economy, and the perspective of families as a smaller unit in society. With both are different subject areas, the functionalist lens analyzes them in a similar way.
The familial view:
With the functionalist perspective, society assumes that all parts do their share to keep it within its equilibrium. The family unit is just one small aspect of society but they are still important to society from a functionalist lens. Having levels within society allows things to run more cohesively as there is a structure of importance. Businesses and corporations may play a higher role in some societies than small groups like family units do. However, for functionalists, family provides a number of functions such as reproduction, protection, and support, but family also creates and forms the members of society. We place trust in guardians but often families and their circumstances are overlooked because families are such a small unit when compared to the bigger society.With cases of child abuse or neglect, society failed the child by placing all of its trust in the guardian of the child. Has society done its job if children still experience child abuse? Society may not put as much effort into smaller units such as family because they have larger parts to focus on and small obstacles like family matters may negatively affect society. Having battered and endangered children enter society is hurtful to them as they will not receive the same education or opportunities. They often fall behind in society because they hide and do not know what to do. Functionalists do acknowledge that families are a part of society, as they form its members, but they are a small part when it comes to comparing bigger issues in society.
In addition to this, from a functionalist view, a family can compare themselves to society. Within the family there are big companies that have the power, such as the parents in a family. There are also smaller parts of the company that lack power and go unheard, such as the abused children of the family.
Families that experience child abuse also see society as the problem. The guardians/aggressors of the child abuse find services such as the Department of Children and Families as a problem because they question the character of the guardian and interfere with their lives. They view society as the issue.
The economical view:
While child abuse is an important social issue that most view needs to resolving, functionalist theorists try to see the give and take aspect of it; with having cases of child abuse, more jobs opportunities are available. Across the world, organizations and businesses are built to help prevent child abuse, educate on the topic of child abuse, and help victims of child abuse cope and recover. Child Protective Services and DYFS are two of the largest businesses in this field who help children and victims who may be at risk with their given guardian or living circumstance. While these businesses push for child abuse to end, and do not promote child abuse, unemployment rates would increase if these companies all shut down and and this would negatively affect the economy. Functionalists do not think that child abuse is a positive part of society, but the issue of child abuse, along with other issues with the family, serves a function in the creation of society.
