SUMMARY:NYDCH Week From Home
DESCRIPTION:  \nNew York City Digital Humanities is happy to announce the 6th Annual NYCDH Week\, February 8-12\, 2021. Taking place at institutions home throughout New York City everywhere\, NYCDH Week gives individuals who are interested in digital humanities an opportunity to learn new techniques and skills\, hear about DH projects\, and become part of a vibrant and diverse community of scholars and practitioners. \n\nCare and Repair\n\n\nThis year’s theme for NYCDH Week 2021\, Care and Repair\, will focus attention on NYCDH as a community of digital humanities practice impacted by the past year. NYCDH week will be organized to provide spaces for caring for one another and developing practices of repair at the personal and institutional level. We look to support each other in ensuring that universities\, cultural heritage institutions\, and anywhere else DH work is being done\, prioritizes preparing students to demonstrate leadership as they engage with social\, political\, and ethical issues. \nNYCDH Week 2021 will move to a fully online format\, while continuing to do what it has done for the past six years — bring together individuals across the region who are interested in digital humanities\, offering them opportunities to learn new techniques and skills\, to hear about DH projects from across the city\, and to connect with a vibrant and diverse community of scholars and practitioners. We have also added a series of evening workshops that will address the intersection of DH work and our community with healthcare and the COVID-19 pandemic\, racial injustice and diversity\, the difficulty of maintaining pedagogical missions\, and the economic impacts of budget austerity and changing labor conditions. \nRegister (Free)\nKickoff Event February 8: 12:00 pm-6:00pm

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce that this year’s Keystone DH will be held at Temple University in Philadelphia. Keystone DH is an annual conference and a network of institutions and practitioners committed to advancing collaborative scholarship in digital humanities research and pedagogy across the Mid-Atlantic. \nProposals are welcome on any aspect of digital technologies and their application to the humanities and/or social sciences. We especially welcome proposals with representative and inclusive speaker involvement. \nPresentations may take the form of short papers\, panel discussions or roundtables\, workshops\, poster sessions\, or showcase demonstration. All panels and workshops will take place over 1.5 hours\, unless otherwise requested. If you are interested in running a longer hackathon\, please email contact@keystonedh.network. SUMMARY:Project Management in the Humanities (Virtual Conference)
DESCRIPTION:From the Great Folks at DHSI! \nProject Management in the Humanities (6 June): The Project Management in the Humanities virtual conference will be held on Saturday\, June 6. Due to increasingly collaborative interdisciplinary projects\, many humanities scholars find themselves as “instant” or “accidental” managers. They are leading teams of researchers from a variety of disciplines\, research assistants\, librarians and others as well as managing financial and other resources. This raises questions for exploration with regard to the application of project management in the humanities generally and digital humanities more specifically. This virtual conference will examine these questions through papers\, presentations and a Twitter discussion. Please register (free) for the conference here.

SUMMARY:Culture Mapping 2020
DESCRIPTION:NewYorkScapes\, NYUDH\, and the Digital Culture/s Colloquium are thrilled to announce the 2020 Culture Mapping Symposium\, to take place April 17-18 at NYU’s Washington Square campus. \n \nCulture Mapping 2020 takes the occasion of a new decade to assemble scholars\, students\, artists\, and other practitioners to reflect together on their own work and processes to a similar end: in service of alternative\, capacious futures that feature justice\, accessibility\, and critical pedagogy as core concerns. We invite proposals that explore the intersection of culture studies\, “mapping” in its myriad registers\, and digital methods through the lens of this theme.

SUMMARY:Digital Spaces Physical Places: A Digital Humanities Symposium
DESCRIPTION:April 16–17\, 2020\, University of Rochester\, River Campus \nKeynote: Henry B. Lovejoy\, Assistant Professor of History\, Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship\, University of Colorado Boulder \n\nDigital technologies have forever altered our understanding of place and space by dividing physical presence from telepresence\, birthing the hybrid and sometimes messy field of digital humanities. At the most basic level\, email\, forums\, and social media have enabled lightspeed asynchronous communication\, changing the way we live\, work\, and perform scholarship. Physical places—real\, historical\, and fictional—can be reconstituted in electronic form and made interactive through the use of augmented or virtual reality\, posing new opportunities for experiencing the past and the present alike. Emergent online platforms present new and accessible sites of learning. \nAnd yet\, while these real\, historical\, or fictional spaces may indeed be re-envisioned in other forms\, how do we keep in mind the specificities and origins that come with a connectedness to particular physical spaces or locales? Scholars in the fields of feminist\, post-colonial\, and critical race studies have kept these questions at the forefront of their digital humanities practice. As digital humanities scholars\, how do we ensure that\, for example\, the political and social dimensions of gender\, race\, sexuality\, and class—dimensions that exist in physical space—do not get lost in newly emerging digital forms? While thinking through digital space reveals new modes of experience\, such as opportunities for community\, accessibility\, and activism\, we might also consider how digital technologies expand\, compress\, and transform different spaces in specific ways for specific bodies.

SUMMARY:Data Visualization Workshop
DESCRIPTION:DATA VISUALIZATION \nA Workshop for \nSHU/Ramapo Digital Humanities Grant Fellows \nFriday\, November 1\, 2019 \n3:00 – 5:00 pm \nMeeting Place: Seton Hall University\, Schwartz Hall 112 \nVISITOR PARKING INFORMATION \nRefreshments will be served \nData visualization is the graphical representation of information and data. It is also a form of storytelling. By using visual elements such as charts\, graphs\, and maps\, data visualization tools provide an accessible way to see and understand trends\, outliers\, and patterns in data. \nSome starting guides to learn more about data visualization are: \n\nSeton Hall University Libraries’ Guide to Data Visualization\nUNC Libraries Guide to Guide to Data Visualization\nUCLA Library’s Data Visualization: a Quick Guide.\n\nCathy Moran Hajo will demonstrate an assignment that incorporates census data between 1860 and 1940 on the town of Mahwah\, using Tableau and Word Clouds. You will also have an opportunity to try Tableau Public for yourself. \nGreg Iannarella will demonstrate the strategies and tools he uses in Business Writing courses for data visualization (Google Sheets) and to promote recursive research and writing (JSTOR Text Analyzer). You will have an opportunity to try Text Analyzer. Please come with a research paper (in electronic form) to use for this part of the workshop. \nIn addition\, we hope you’ll come prepared to join the conversation with examples of your own and with information or questions you have about creating student assignments or doing research using data visualization tools. \nPlease let us know if there is a tool YOU’D like to demonstrate.
