I think the 1920s were a very prominent part in American culture. This era was defined by the Harlem Renaissance which celebrated African-American culture, and the popularity of jazz music influenced fashion and dance. The 1920s also consisted of lots of technological advances such as the radio, film, and cars. There was also tons of social change in the 1920s such as the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote and the “Flappers” which challenged traditional gender roles for women. Finally, another integral part of the 1920s was the “Prohibition Act”. The 18th Amendment led to the ban of alcohol, which resulted in the rise of organized crime and defiance of authority.

One of the most talked about moments of the 1920s was the Great Depression. This actually started very late into the 20s in 1929. The Great Depression can be described as the longest economic downturn ever. It resulted in severe unemployment, banks closing, and widespread poverty. The Great Depression with the New Deal policies, which stabilized banking systems, government spending influenced by World War II, which helped with industrial production and helped bring up the employment rate.

A collage posted by The Library of Congress on the fads and crazes of the 1920s.

Jazz culture of the Roaring 20’s.

After looking at the two images, I became more interested in what pop culture was like in the 1920s. Cars were a big thing in the 1920s, for the first time people were able to go wherever they wanted anytime they wanted. This played into 1920s pop culture because it provided people with independence. There is no denying that jazz played a huge role in pop culture during the 1920s. It was everywhere, in movies, in different soundtracks, and in speakeasies. The 1920s is known for famous musicians like Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and Duke Ellington who all shaped jazz into what it is today.

Prohibition was huge in the 1920s as it took effect in 1920. It sparked a rise in a new culture of criminal businessmen such as bootleggers, gangsters, and crime bosses. During the 1920s, pop culture glamorized the criminal lifestyle. One of the most famous moments in 1920s pop culture is the Saint Valentine’s Day massacre on February 14th, 1929. Al Capone carried out a plan to kill his rival “Bugs” Moran. He was unable to accomplish this. Capone was jailed two years after this for tax evasion.

Finally, movie theatres became a huge deal in the 1920s. Gloria Swanson, Clara Bow, Mary Pickford, Colleen Moore, Lousie Brooks, Charlie Chaplin and Al Jolson became household names in the entertainment industry. Americans would use cinema as a way to escape their problems. Silent movies were a big thing in the 1920s and no one captured the audience’s attention more than Charlie Chaplin. Any film featuring him was guaranteed to be a success. In 1927, “talkies” were introduced to the world of film and they became a big hit. People were so amazed with how the films they would go see featured actual talking from the actors.

In conclusion, I find the pop culture of the 1920s very interesting and I love to see how it shaped American culture to this day. Cars, music, and movies are still things we use this day and they will continue to evolve and grow.

“1920s Pop Culture.” 1920s Pop Culture.
