It sets a written set of morals everyone is expected to follow. While the law is not always right, it controls civilization and what is socially acceptable.

In the case of LGBTQ+ individuals in the military, previous legislation like DADT and transgender bans made it acceptable to discriminate based upon gender identity and sexual orientation. When the law shows that LGBTQ+ individuals do not belong in the military, others believe it as well. This is part of the cause of homophobia and persecution. It justifies the targeting of LGBTQ+ individuals causing harm to military service and LGBTQ+ individuals by creating a hostile environment in a place where trust and comradery are crucial. The first step to a more inclusive military is repealing bans on LGBTQ+ individuals

Health Care Legislation

For LGBTQ+ to be accepted in the military as equals, healthcare for these individuals needs to adapt. LGBTQ+ individuals first off should feel safe and comfortable with accessing health care without fear of unequal treatment. Confidentiality should be maintained between patient and doctor, medical professionals should not give poor medical care due to their patient identifying as LGBTQ+, doctors should be educated and experienced sensitivity training to handle all different types of people including LGBTQ+ individuals and so on. The military still has a long way to go in this aspect. Many LGBTQ+ individuals actually seek medical help elsewhere because of the fear of being outed or being given poor medical service (Goldbach).

Anti-Discrimination Legislation

Tammy Baldwin is a U.S Senator for Wisconsin

Despite some laws, in general, protecting LGBTQ+ individuals like the civil rights act of 1964, there is no federal law preventing, for example, discrimination by private employers. The military openly discriminates against LGBTQ+ individuals. Protection is flimsy and weak allowing the continual acceptance of homophobia and hate against transgender. Take women and African Americans joining the military as an example. In history, neither of these groups was accepted in the military until wars caused the U.S military to be desperate for service members. Now, there are plenty of anti-discrimination laws for minorities. Many religious groups were discriminate in history as well, but today there is more of an accepting atmosphere for differing religious beliefs. The military has a long way to go in protecting minorities such as women and LGBTQ+ individuals from experiencing hate while serving, but legislation not only for the military but also for the general public is one of the first steps needed for equality. In fact, in 2019 the Equality Act was proposed to give LGBTQ+ individuals stronger protection against discrimination. Senator Tammy Baldwin says “It is just wrong that in a majority of states, LGBTQ Americans are not fully protected from being fired, evicted from their home, or denied services because of who they are or who they love. It is time to end this kind of discrimination because LGBTQ Americans should have the freedom of full equality.” Ideas and legislation such as this can give LGBTQ+ people more equality and better health in the general population, and eventually, this can be translated into military service.

Power of the Law

Legislation has the power to determine right from wrong. It is an idea that over a long period of time, can shape the moral outlook of society. Laws preventing discrimination and hate eventually creates a society where persecution is frowned upon. Take laws against child labor, protection for domestic abuse victims, and the landmark Civil Rights law of 1964. All these laws helped to change the world and how individuals are treated for the better and laws regarding LGBTQ+ individuals in the military are no different.

The Influence of Legislation Laws in our society determines right from wrong.
