This post compares and analyzes seven college mental health programs and are listed in alphabetical order.

Kean University
Kean University, located in the city of Union, offers two core programs of individual and group counseling, along with psychiatry services and medication management. They also provide free online mental health screenings. On their counseling center’s page, they list resources for wellness and information on what is known as the “wellness wheel” or eight dimensions of wellness. From April 27th, 2020 to May 1st, 2020, Kean actually held their own virtual mental health week to provide more support to their students and faculty through Instagram. Each day had a different focus and taught ways to manage anxiety, tips to increase your motivation, positive psychology, and mindfulness.

Montclair State University
Montclair State University (MSU), located in Montclair, provides group counseling, Therapy Assistance Online (TAO), psychiatry services, and short-term individual counseling. They have also updated one of their programs to include “Let’s TeleTalk” where students can book an appointment online and speak with a counselor. They have a mental health ambassador program that allows students to work on their leadership skills while also spread mental health and wellness awareness throughout the MSU campus and community. They also have two separate links, one for suicide prevention, and the other one for resources based on various situations such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

New Jersey Institute of Technology
At New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), located in Newark, has various different programs through its counseling center. They offer psychological services which include counseling, academic support to assist with goal-setting and time management, addiction counseling, cross-cultural counseling, LGBTQ counseling, testing services, and career counseling. Within each of these, NJIT takes a mental health approach to support their students in any way possible. They even have a “relaxation room” where students can go by appointment to take some time to de-stress.

Princeton University

Princeton University, New Jersey’s Ivy League school located in Princeton, offers counseling services that include both short-term and a form of long-term therapy, as there is no official limit, individual counseling, group counseling, as well as relationship counseling. They also create their own audio “mind-body” program audio guides to reduce stress and link to mindfulness resources on topics such as positive psychology and self-compassion. There is also an existing program called “TIGERSPAW” which is a mental health and well-being program dedicated to student-athletes specifically.

Ramapo College of New Jersey
Located in Mahwah, Ramapo College of New Jersey (RCNJ), has four core service categories: individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, and psychiatric services with an on-site psychiatrist. They provide links based on several mental health disorders, links to podcasts and TED Talks, relaxing coloring pages, and mental health apps. They have the “Wellness is Now (WIN) Peer Education” program which is based on six parts of the wellness wheel: physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, social, and career. They also have an “Ask, Listen, Refer” program which is a suicide prevention training program to educate students and staff in recognizing risk factors and other warning signs of suicide.

Rowan University
Just recently in December 2019, at Rowan University located in Glassboro, students spoke out regarding the services on campus when two students succumbed to suicide within two weeks of one another. Though the campus lists several on-campus mental health or “wellness” services, accessibility is a big concern as students have mentioned the lengthy waitlist to receive any of them. However, even with the fifteen counselors that are currently working at the center is not enough with the growing population of the campus community. Additionally, most of the counselors do not have their own offices because of a lack of space, and thus, “compete for exam rooms.” (1)

Rutgers University
Rutgers University offers counseling services such as individual counseling, group counseling, community-based counseling, and a program called ‘CAPS Next Step.” This is tailored for students that need more psychological support than others and have a schedule of programs/seminars every week. Currently, they are also running telehealth or virtual counseling visits for their students. There are also psychiatric services and medication management, plus a crisis intervention program

ANALYSIS
From my research, it is very clear that there are some programs that are more sophisticated or successful than others. However, this can also boil down to student population and also be based on how many students utilize their campuses programs. The program that I would declare the most diverse and innovative mental health program would be NJIT’s because they offer various types of counseling from the mental health perspective. For example, their career counseling is not through their career center and does not focus on job placement, however, focuses on the student’s mindset about jobs, whether they are having doubts about their career path or need to choose one. In a college setting, this aspect of job hunting is also extremely important.

RCNJ’s website was also interesting as they took a different route with their resources page and did not just include articles and links to other organizations like most other colleges did, but they also included TED Talks, podcasts, and coloring pages. This is very unique and speaks to the other modes of self-help that are possible through mental health and wellness that more schools should adopt. Princeton’s audio guides for stress reduction are also an example of this.

There are over fifty colleges throughout the state of New Jersey.
